Contact Lenses for Teens or Tweens Part 1

March 30th, 2017 at 9:46 am

As an Optometrist, I am often presented with children and/or their parents expressing an interest in contact lenses. Although this may be a terrifying thought at first, I think contact lenses can be a great addition to glasses especially if your tween or teen is active in sports, extracurricular activities or has a higher prescription. In these specific cases, contact lenses are more stable on the eye when moving and provide an unobstructed view and better peripheral vision, allowing your teen or tween to react quicker to both players and objects such as balls. Their vision remains clear regardless of Read More…

Signs of Love … The Eyes Tell All

February 14th, 2017 at 9:48 am

When you see your bae or someone you are attracted to, your pupils will dilate up to three times their normal size depending on the light condition. The moment you make eye contact, there’s nothing you can do to control your pupils as it is an involuntary action by your autonomic nervous system (the same area that controls breathing and heart rate). When we see another person’s pupils dilate, we are far more likely to find them attractive (love at first sight!!).

“Sleeping around with your eye makeup is a dirty habit”.– Dr. Tanya Gill, OD We couldn’t agree more! Beauty Resolution 2017 – stop sleeping in your makeup and that includes your eye makeup. Managing Dry Eyes – Measuring Tear Osmolarity and Tear Function

January 15th, 2017 at 7:56 am

With the many patients we treat for dry eyes, one thing is for sure, they don’t all present with the same symptoms and signs. Some come in with complaints of tearing when outdoors or a gritty sandy feeling in the eye while others present with a stinging/burning sensation or vision fluctuations. Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface accompanied by increased osmolarity of the tear film and inflammation of the ocular surface. At EyedeologyTM we are always looking for new and innovative approaches to dry eye treatments. As part of our diagnostic tool kit for Read More…

Punctal Plugs for Dry eyes

December 15th, 2016 at 8:22 pm

A punctal plug is a tiny biocompatible medical device that is inserted into the tear duct (puncta) of an eye to block the duct. This slows down the drainage of the tears from the eye increasing the eye’s tear film and surface moisture to relieve dry eyes. Plugs are one of the treatment options used by our Optometrists as part of our dry eye treatment protocols. There are two types of tear duct plugs: Semi-permanent, typically made of long-lasting materials such as silicone Dissolvable, made of materials such as collagen that the body eventually absorbs.  Last from a few days to as long as several months. Dissolvable punctal plugs Read More…
