Community Outreach: Kids U Eye Presentation
Dr. Farrah and Dr. Nalisha visited the children at both Kids U McKnight and Bridgeland with their friend Fribbit! Fribbit is a fun and friendly frog who is the official mascot for the Eye See… Eye Learn (ESEL) program. They educated both children as young as 19 months to 6 years of age on the importance of taking care of their eyes. In the afternoon, they spoke to the parents of the infants at the Bridgeland center on the importance of making eye exams part of their annual regimen. Children should get their first eye exam at the age of 6 months and thereafter yearly. Alberta Health Care covers one annual comprehensive eye exam for every child. Medically necessary visits are covered for all age groups. The Eye See Eye Learn (ESEL) program gives a free pair of glasses to children in their kindergarten year.
It was a fun filled morning with lots of discussion about eye health, nutrition and eye safety. The children learned about the different parts of their eyes, wearing the right eye protection in the sun and for sports, and healthy foods for their eyes. Children had a chance to try on sunglasses, fribbit’s glasses and watched a short video on wearing glasses. The children put their creativity to good use when they used colourful pipe cleaners to make their very own glasses.
Preventative education is one of our key missions at EyedeologyTM! Make an eye exam part of your child’s back to school checklist. If you would like us to present at your school or childcare center, feel free to contact us. We would be happy to help.
