Myopia, also known as nearsightedness or short-sightedness, is an eye condition where objects nearby or a short distance away are clear but objects that are far away are blurred. Myopia is the single most significant cause of distance vision impairment. Myopia management is a treatment option we use at Eyedeology to slow down the progression of Myopia in children and young adults.
Recommendations
During an eye exam, children and young adults who are diagnosed with Myopia or have had a change in their recent prescription will be advised to have a separate Myopia consultation. Goals of treatment and options based on motivation and lifestyle, monitoring schedule as well as environmental modifications will be discussed.
Coverage
Myopia management consultations are not covered by Alberta Health Care. We will discuss a fee structure during initial assessment and in conjunction with review of treatment options. Costs apply to all consultations as well as various treatments and follow-up appointments. Payment options are available.

In 2010, approximately 1.5 billion people around the world were affected by Myopia, and it is estimated that this number will rise to 5 billion by 2050. Most myopic people have a longer eye shape and the focusing power of the eye is determined by the peripheral or side vision, not central vision. With Myopia management we create a peripheral de-focus to prevent the eye from elongating further and thus prevent Myopia from increasing or becoming more severe. Watch More with our Optometrist.
