Fall Eye Allergies

A Girl with black spectacles

Fall is officially here and already the weather is starting to become cooler and the leaves are changing into a beautiful golden array. Although many people associate seasonal allergies with springtime, a large number of individuals experience symptoms during the autumn months as well. In addition to sneezing and congestion, eye allergies are often a significant cause of discomfort. When suffering from allergies, the eyes can become itchy, puffy, and red and often burn or water. Why do allergies sometimes become worse during the fall season? One of the biggest culprits, ragweed, is a common allergen that causes hayfever and pollinates from the middle of August to early October. Mold spores are also released in autumn, and become more common in the air as decaying leaves and other vegetation fall to the ground. This worsens allergy symptoms because mold particles in the air become increasingly irritating to people with allergies. If you are experiencing eye-related allergy symptoms there are a number of treatments you can consider. Artificial tears don’t treat allergies directly, however they can rinse the allergens out of the eyes. Eye drops that contain antihistamines will treat the symptoms directly by minimizing inflammation and itching. Oral antihistamines can also provide effective relief for many people. If you are still suffering, prescription antihistamines or corticosteroids can be prescribed to manage your symptoms. In more severe cases, allergy shots or other forms of immunotherapy can also be considered. If eye allergies are preventing you from enjoying the beautiful autumn season let us help you find a solution that works for you!
